AI Scams – What Are They and How Do We Spot Them?

Reading Time: 5 minutes

AI is rocketing ahead of other tech in cyberspace. AI can be used in deceptive schemes to trick people into giving away money, data or access to systems. These scams are getting more and more sophisticated due to how easy it is for malicious actors to get access to powerful AI tools like deepfakes, chatbots and even voice changing technology.

Scammers can use AI to do some scary stuff like; AI Generated Phishing Attacks, AI Powered Romance Scams, AI Powered Financial Scams, AI Chatbot Scams and Deepfake Scams. For some example, a malicious user could hijack a link to your banks online banking portal and implement an AI bot that reads “Your Account has been Frozen, Speak to Support now” or an AI generated profile on your favourite dating app builds trust and asks for help with medical bills.

So how do we stay ahead of these attacks? How do we spot them?

If something looks too good to be true, it probably is, ensure you thoroughly vet anyone claiming to give you money.

Avoid clicking links that you did not expect, Phishers rely on people on autopilot and not checking their work.

Verify Identities, whenever possible ask for a callback or a more appropriate form of communication.

Avoid red flags like bots insisting for full access to your account or someone asking for sudden and explicit requests for money.

Always take the time and verify who you’re talking too. AI may be fast, but being cautious and careful is smarter.
